If you've gone looking for a rechargeable version of the little silver battery in your key finder or car remote, you've probably run into the LIR2032 and wondered whether it's simply a reusable CR2032. It's close — but there are real differences worth knowing before you buy. Here's a plain explanation.
They're the same size, and they fit the same devices
Both cells measure 20mm across and 3.2mm thick. That's what the numbers mean: "20" for the diameter, "32" for the thickness. An LIR2032 drops into a CR2032 holder without any modification.
The letters are the important part. CR denotes a single-use cell you throw away when it's flat. LIR denotes a rechargeable lithium-ion cell you can charge and reuse over and over again.

The capacity difference is the one that matters
This is the fact most listings gloss over, so let's be direct about it: an LIR2032 holds roughly a fifth of the energy of a CR2032 per charge. A single-use cell that lasted your tracker eight months will not last eight months as a rechargeable. It will need topping up considerably more often.
Whether that's a good trade depends entirely on the device. If you can pop the cover off in a few seconds, recharging is a minor chore and you never buy another battery. If the device is fiddly to open, sealed, or something you genuinely want to forget about for years, a single-use CR2032 is still the better tool for the job.
Will it work in my device?
In our testing, LIR2032 cells have worked across a wide range of everyday coin-cell devices. Two practical notes:
- Battery level indicators can read oddly. If your device shows a battery percentage, it was probably calibrated around a single-use cell, so it may report a rechargeable cell's remaining charge inaccurately — or drop off more abruptly than you'd expect. The cell is usually fine; the gauge just isn't built for it.
- If the manufacturer specifies a single-use cell only, follow that. Some equipment is designed around one specific battery, and it's not worth second-guessing on something you rely on.
Where rechargeable coin cells work well
- Tracking tags and key finders
- Car and garage remotes
- LED tealights and small lights
- Digital calipers, thermometers, kitchen scales
- Anything you open easily and use regularly
Where you should not use them
- Smoke alarms and any life-safety device. Never. These need a known, long, predictable runtime and are usually certified for a specific battery. Use exactly what the manufacturer specifies.
- Medical devices — follow the manufacturer's specification without exception.
- Devices you cannot easily open, or that need to run unattended for years.
One thing you must never do
Never attempt to charge a CR2032 or any other single-use cell. They are not designed to accept current and doing so risks leaking, venting, rupture or fire. Only ever charge cells marked as rechargeable, in a charger intended for them.
Safety with any coin cell
Coin batteries are hazardous if swallowed and can cause severe internal injury or death, especially to young children. Keep them out of reach, keep them in their child-resistant packaging until you need them, and dispose of used cells promptly. If a battery is swallowed, seek immediate medical attention or call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.
The short version
An LIR2032 is the same shape as a CR2032 and fits the same devices, but it holds less energy per charge and needs a charger. In something you open easily and use often, that means charging and reusing one cell instead of buying replacements for years. In a sealed or safety-critical device, stick with what the manufacturer specifies.
